What Is Visitor’s Insurance and When Do I Need It?
If you’re planning an international trip, visitor’s insurance could be really beneficial to have. When traveling to a new country, you’ll want to be prepared for anything that could come your way. Visiting another country without taking the proper precautions could prove to be quite costly.
If you were to need medical attention due to a pre-existing condition or have some other sort of medical emergency, visitor’s insurance could provide you with the coverage you need. There are so many things you’ll need to have in order before traveling internationally, obtaining visitor’s insurance is a great way to minimize your overall stress.
What Is Visitor’s Insurance?
This type of insurance is designed to cover certain medical needs while you’re traveling abroad. As a visitor in another country, your regular health coverage won’t be valid, so you’ll have to look into alternative opinions if you want to be protected.
What Does Visitor’s Insurance Cover?
This coverage is applicable when you become sick or get injured while traveling abroad. It covers what is necessary for you to get the proper care. Coverage offerings differ from company to company, but here are some of the most common perks you’ll get with visitor’s insurance.
- If you’re sick or injured. Your sickness or injury must have happened during your trip in order for it to be covered. It could be the result of a pre-existing condition flaring up unexpectedly. It doesn’t have to be a life-threatening situation for you to seek help.
- If you’re the victim of an accident. Let’s say you suffer from a car accident or a fall during your vacation. You’ll be able to have your medical treatment covered until you’re back on your feet. You can also be prescribed medicine, and have the prescription covered under your policy.
- You need to evacuate from the country. If you find yourself needing to leave the country due to a medical reason, you can be relocated to your home country. Visitor’s insurance covers emergency relocation on your behalf.
This insurance is really meant to cover common medical emergencies and ensure you receive the best possible care. It doesn’t extend much beyond that. If you want higher levels of protection, you might want to look into travel insurance.
Visitor’s Insurance vs. Travel Insurance
Unlike visitor’s insurance, travel insurance has a bit more to offer in the way of support when traveling abroad. If you plan to be visiting a country for a while, you might want to consider purchasing travel insurance instead.
What You Get With Travel Insurance
If you opt into purchasing travel insurance through Insured Nomads, you’ll get a wide variety of perks. We like to make sure our travelers are prepared for all of life’s unexpected moments while they’re out in an unfamiliar area.
Our Offerings
If you’re traveling alone, you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re protected in case of an emergency. There are a number of protections we can provide for you at Insured Nomads. Every individual or group covered under one of our health plans will benefit from the following:
- Medical coverage. With this comes 24/7 emergency medical care at any local urgent care, protection against COVID-19 (if you get COVID, you’ll have access to medical care), treatment for any pre-existing conditions, and emergency dental care.
- Transportation. If you need to be transported to your local urgent care for medical treatment, you can have this covered under your travel insurance policy. You’re also covered in the event of a natural disaster or emergency evacuation from the country due to circumstances outside of your control.
- Personal property and more. If the airline loses your luggage or damages its contents, you can be reimbursed for this. Reimbursement also applies if you’re the victim of theft, or if your travel plans are delayed due to a covered event. Travel delays can be brief, but sometimes they are extended for several hours or even days. If you end up having to pay for more meals or extended living accommodations due to this travel delay, you can file a claim to have those things reimbursed as well.
- Adventure and marine sports coverage. We also offer additional protection for those who are planning to participate in extreme water sports or other activities that fall under this category.
For those traveling as a group, we also offer 24/7 mental health counseling as an extra layer of support.
Other Types of Travel Coverages
There are also some additional layers of protection you can get ahead of traveling abroad. Here are the other coverages you might want to look into.
Trip Delay Insurance
There are many reasons outside of your control that your trip might get delayed such as weather complications, or other global emergencies. COVID-19 has also played its part in delaying or postponing trips.
If your trip is delayed due to one of those reasons, a medical emergency, or another covered event, you can be reimbursed. Reimbursement applies to any prepaid expenses that are unused such as airplane tickets, hotel reservations, rental cars, or planned activities.
Trip Interruption Insurance
If you were to have a medical emergency that prevented you from continuing your trip, you could receive a reimbursement for any airfare, and unused hotel nights or other experiences. You can also be relocated back to your home country at no additional cost to you.
This coverage is good to have if you’re elderly or have a pre-existing condition that you could possibly end up needing treatment for. If you have flare-ups often, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Trip Cancellation Insurance
Another coverage that you can look into is trip cancellation insurance. This coverage can apply if you need to back out of your trip before you even leave town. Perhaps your trip has been canceled due to a natural disaster, like a tornado, or you have a medical emergency.
In this case, you’d be able to receive a reimbursement for the amount that you paid upfront for any planned experiences, lodging, rental vehicles, etc.

Tips for Traveling to Another Country
If you’re thinking about traveling to another country, there are some things you need to do and prepare for beforehand. On top of making sure you’re cleared to travel, you’ll need to prepare yourself for time in a new and unfamiliar place.
Here are some travel tips for your international trip:
- Familiarize yourself with the culture first. The last thing you probably want is to come across as offensive or insensitive because you’ve spoken or behaved in a way that doesn’t align with a particular culture. Taking the time to learn about a place before traveling there is a great way to minimize culture shock and even a great way to make friends with the locals.
- Make sure your passport is valid. If you don’t have a passport, you’ll need to go through the process. It’s not a quick or easy one, so make sure you hold off on booking any travel plans until you have your documentation in hand. It can take up to 12 weeks to be issued your new passport, even if you already have one and just need to renew it.
- Pack for the weather. It’s very likely that the weather where you live primarily is going to be much different than the country you’re traveling to. Check the weather forecast to make sure you’re bringing along the proper clothing for your trip. It wouldn’t be fun to have to purchase an entirely new wardrobe while you’re there.
- Pin some interesting spots on your map. Do your research on the area you’ll be staying in and find out what sorts of things you can do there, and what types of food they have. You can plan ahead by bookmarking some spots that look cool so you can try them out before you head back home.
- Locate your nearest hospital and police station. Even if you don’t memorize any other locations, you should learn where the nearest medical facility and police station are and how far they are from where you are staying. This way, if you ever find yourself in need of help and don’t have your phone, or its battery has died, you will at least know your way to one of these locations. Commit street names and landmarks to memory so you can find either one from wherever you are.
- Don’t travel alone at night. Even if you’re used to doing this where you live, it might not be a good idea in an unfamiliar place. If you must travel at night by yourself, make sure you are aware of your surroundings, stay close to street lights, and your phone is fully charged. Be wary of carrying around tools commonly used for self-defense in the U.S., as they are illegal in some countries.
- Make sure you have the proper currency. You should be able to exchange money for local currency once you arrive as well, but it’s a good idea to do it while you’re still at home to avoid any confusion. Make sure you have enough funds for your entire trip so your experience is not disrupted.
