🇺🇸 Travel Requirements for USA
Visa Waiver Program (VWP) – Tourism or Business up to 90 days
Nationals of 42 eligible countries can enter without a visa, but must apply for ESTA online at least 72 hours before departure, valid for 2 years or until passport expiry.
Stay is limited to 90 days, not extendable. Must hold a biometric passport, travel on an approved carrier, and have a return/onward ticket
B‑1/B‑2 Visitor Visa – Business or tourism up to 6 months
For those who aren’t eligible for VWP, or want to stay more than 90 days but less than 6 months, apply at a U.S. consulate.
- B‑1 for short business trips (meetings, conferences, contract negotiation)
- B‑2 for tourism, visiting relatives, medical treatment, or short recreational courses (< 6 months)
- A combo B‑1/B‑2 visa covers both
Visa generally valid for up to 10 years; each trip allows up to 180 days stay, with possible extensions.
You cannot work or be employed in the U.S.
Documents required include:
Valid passport (must be valid at least 6 months beyond your stay, unless exempt)
- Form DS‑160, application fee (~US $185 as of 2025)
- Photo, travel itinerary, proof of funds/home ties, visa interview
Optional: travel insurance letter (some applicants bring it as supporting evidence)
Travel Insurance Requirements
Travel insurance is not mandatory for entering the U.S. under VWP or B‑1/B‑2 visas.
However, it’s strongly recommended:
U.S. healthcare costs are among the highest globally; even a simple ER visit can cost thousands
- Visitor insurance plans cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation without typical U.S. health plan coverage
For exchange visitors on J‑1 visas, health insurance is required, with specified minimum coverage limits

Common travel plans abroad don’t work here — you need U.S.-compliant visitor insurance, like Insured Nomads’ World Explorer Plans.
